The Director of the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO/WHO), Dr. Mirta Roses Periago will pay her first official visit to
Barbados this week, November 5-8, 2003.
During her four-day visit she will call on the Governor
General, Sir Clifford Husbands ; Prime Minister Owen Arthur; Senior Minister and
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Billie Miller; Minister of
Health, Dr. Jerome Walcott; Vice President Operations of the Caribbean
Development Bank, Desmond Burton; other government officials and members of
non-governmental organizations.
Another highlight of the PAHO Director’s visit will be her
appearance at the 11th annual PAHO/Caribbean Awards for Excellence in
Health Journalism on Friday evening at the Grand Barbados Beach Resort, where
she will deliver the feature address. Dr. Periago will also address a two-day
workshop on Hospital Governance, November 6-7. The Director’s presentation will
be on “The Steering Role of Ministries of Health: Challenges for the 21st
Century”.
